Requirements for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diving Course

To take this course, you must have (according to PADI):

  • PADI Open Water certification (or a certification from another recognized training organization that qualifies you).
  • Be at least 15 years old (12 years old for Junior Advanced Open Water Diver).

Young divers can continue their adventure and learn more skills by taking the Advanced Open Water Diver course with some limitations:

  • Junior Open Water Divers aged 10-11 years must complete three adventure dives to become Junior Adventure Divers. They must also dive with a PADI professional or a certified parent or guardian. Their dives cannot exceed 12 meters (40 feet).
  • Junior Open Water Divers aged 12-14 years can complete three adventure dives to earn the Junior Adventure Diver level or five adventure dives to earn the Junior Advanced Open Water level. They must dive with a certified adult.

After completing the last dives of the course, PADI recommends not flying for 18 hours.

Course Description – PADI Advanced Open Water

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course consists of 5 specialty dives (2 mandatory and 3 elective). Before diving, we will provide you with access codes for the PADI e-learning platform, where you must read the corresponding sections and complete the knowledge reviews at the end of each section (approximately 1 hour per section).

The two mandatory specialty dives are Deep Dive and Navigation. The remaining three are elective, and our instructors highly recommend the following:

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy (important for optimizing air consumption and avoiding buoyancy loss accidents).
  • Search and Recovery (closely related to navigation).
  • Multilevel Diving with a Computer or another elective, which you can discuss with our instructors.

Once you receive the access codes, we will plan your course. On the first day, we will conduct the easier and shallower dives, such as Navigation and Peak Performance Buoyancy, and on the next morning, we will conduct the Deep Dive and the elective dives.

List of Specialty Dives

  • Deep Diving Specialty: You will descend deeper than 18 meters, with a maximum limit of 30 meters. We will teach you deep diving techniques, both ascent and descent, to ensure safe dives while learning new concepts about diving at these depths.
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty: You will master buoyancy control, which means more comfortable diving and less air consumption. You will learn buoyancy techniques that will be useful in all your dives.
  • Search and Recovery Specialty: You will learn search and recovery methods along with their potential risks. You will plan search and recovery dives and develop recovery procedures.
  • Navigation Specialty: You will learn how to use a compass and orient yourself underwater. We will teach you distance estimation techniques, underwater patterns, and how to use the Nav Finder to follow irregular paths.
  • Fish Identification Dive: You will identify local marine life, distinguish their habitats and behaviors, learn about the Project AWARE, and gain strategies for marine species identification.
  • Boat Diving Specialty: Since most dives are done from a boat, you will learn nautical terminology, procedures, safety equipment, and boarding techniques.
  • Multilevel and Computer Diving Specialty: You will plan and conduct a fully structured multilevel dive with your instructor. You will use a dive computer to track your ascent and descent and learn how to plan a multilevel dive.
  • Night Diving Specialty: You will dive at twilight with the need for a flashlight, observing that the environment remains the same, but marine life behaves differently. You will also see species that are not visible during the day. We will teach you how to plan night dives, use night diving equipment, and manage night diving stress.
  • Wreck Diving Specialty: You will dive into a shipwreck and observe the ecosystem created around it, where various marine species inhabit. We will teach you wreck diving techniques and the necessary safety rules for these types of dives.
